STOP WORRYING and get the paint color you really want!
I remember back in the day when my Mom was teaching me how to paint we would go to Montgomery Ward to get the paint and it was always an ordeal! The guy behind the counter was usually overworked and stressed because there were too many customers for him to wait on. Color matching was out of the question! You had to pick off the limited color chart and that was that.
When I started my business in the early 80’s some of the guys at the paint stores had some knowledge of color and after many attempts they were able to get close to the color samples my customers provided. But it was hit or miss at best.
You’ll still find a few people who pride themselves on matching colors by sight, but most rely on color matching software. “The engineers and technicians who develop these tools have worked to improve the color matching systems so that you can get within a percent or two of a color,” says Debbie Zimmer, a spokesperson for the Paint Quality Institute. (Her blogs and articles are the best)!
The staff at any paint store can match just about anything you bring in to them…a piece of fabric, an old paint can, a picture frame, different manufacturers color chips, it’s so easy today. I prefer Sherwin-Williams…they have awesome color tools online:
and they have trained color consultants at some of the stores and always have time to help with matching.
